Since joining German Shepherd Rescue Elite’s walk group, I’ve tried to instigate a fundraiser annually that champions GSRE. Last year, the Wing Walk experience, raised over £4100! so the aim is to smash that this year with everyone’s help! I’m delighted that this years challenge is a collaboration with Rachel Harrison - who also loves adventure - and on Friday 7th June 2024, we’ll be taking on the “24h 3 Peaks Challenge!” Maverick (my best friend and GSD companion) and I have accomplished this previously over 4 days. It was a wonderful experience so it seems to be the right time to push harder with Rachel and go for gold! Our companions will be enjoying home comforts whilst we brave the Peaks on this occasion! Our route is South to North: Snowdon, Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis. We’ll travel Friday am, grab some rest and at 19:00 the 24h timer will start as we set off to climb Snowdon - no stops until we reach the bottom of Ben Nevis! In total, we will have hiked 26 miles, ascended 9,843ft, travelled 1,298 miles, tested our fitness, endurance and fought the excessive desire to just stop and sleep! Both Rachel and I are huge lovers of GSD’s. I live with Maverick, whom I have had since a pup, and Rachel lives with Tilly. Tilly had been re-homed 4 times before eventually finding her forever home with Rachel. She was an overly anxious dog with matted hair but has come on leaps and bounds with Rachel’s dedication, patience and loyalty- a great example of what can be achieved when taking on this particular breed. German Shepherds are very misunderstood, overbred by backyard breeders who see them as trophies or cash cows but also through sheer lack of training and understanding these dogs can face a lifetime of misery and abuse. Many face kennels having complex needs. GSRE work tirelessly to help fund rehabilitation, positive based training, offer safe shelter where possible, fostering and a rehoming scheme. The charity is run by extremely dedicated volunteers and supportive walk groups throughout the country help to fundraise. The dogs rely massively on donations to keep them fed and housed safely and sadly, in the current climate, there are more dogs than spaces available. Please dig deep to sponsor Rachel and I.
