Round 2 (Doin' it for Diabetes)

Me and my mate taking on the three peaks, raising money to fund my partnership project trip to Botswana to help young people with diabetes. I'm also type 1 diabetic, which only adds to the challenge! (I also completed the three peaks in three days with my dad a few years ago).

Fundraising for Botswana Diabetes Partnership 2019

Hi, I'm Oli Combellack, and I have been type 1 diabetic since January 2012. Although at first I was shaken by it when initially diagnosed, not once have I let it stop me in my adventures. Hearing about this project, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to help those less fortunate but also to learn from them. Even before going to Botswana, I have learnt how fortunate I am to live with diabetes in the UK, which is why this project will be so beneficial for young diabetics in Botswana. Any donations will be greatly appreciated. More info on the project below... Next Easter, I, with East of England Children and Young People's Diabetes Network will be going with a group of 11 other young people with type 1 diabetes and a team of diabetes health care professionals to Gaborone in Botswana to undertake a partnership project with Botswana Diabetes aimed at improving diabetes outcomes for the young people from both countries. This is a unique opportunity for us to travel to an exciting new country, to experience a different culture and to make friends and share experiences with other young people with type 1 diabetes. What will the project involve? The project will last 10 days in total. During this time we will participate in a diabetes education camp which will be led by Botswana Diabetes, with input from the healthcare team from the UK. At this camp, we will have the opportunity to share experiences of growing up with type 1 from the young people from Botswana. Together we will learn about the each other's culture and what it means to be a young person with type 1 in these countries. We will attend sessions aimed at helping them all to become more independent in the management of their diabetes and we will undertake a series of exciting team challenges together. Following the camp, we will spend some time in the capital, Gaborone, where we will work together with our new friends from Botswana to decorate the children’s diabetes clinic. Where will the money go? We will be fundraising not only to cover their flight, accommodation and food but also fundraising to contribute our efforts to support the diabetes camp in Botswana and to take over some well-needed supplies and resources. In the past, the diabetes camp in Botswana have hosted around 60 young people aged between 7-20, but only occur if funds can be found. Some families in parts of the country have no fridges and have to travel to the clinic twice a day to receive their insulin. One of our fundraising aims is to fund for Frio bags which are lightweight cooling bags specifically designed to keep insulin cool in the heat. This would enable families to keep their insulin safe during the day, both at home and at school.
