Kids Count Crawlers

We are three former Youth Board Members of Kids Count, who have now all been involved with the Charity for so many years that we have now all become Mentors to the current Youth Board Members. We are fundraising for Kids Count to enable future generations to benefit from similar opportunities for young people to those that we participated in. KIDS COUNT THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE As a part of UK-Charity, Kids Count’s continuing fund-raising program, three of our former Youth Board members (and now Mentors to our current Youth Board), with over 25 years association with the Charity, will be attempting the Three Peaks Challenge, sometime at the end of April or May 2016. The challenge involves our Three Amigos, Dr Dan (Squirrell), Capt Americo (Congo) and Jinal (007) Shah, climbing the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in a 24 hour period. The three peaks to be conquered are: Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands, Scafell Pike in the English Lake District and Snowdon in the Welsh National Park of Snowdonia. Our intrepid volunteers have varying degrees of experience to tackle this stretching target: Jinal (The Team Leader) is a Queen Scout and has previously completed the challenge as part of another team, in a time just under the target period. Dr Dan has previously scaled Scafell Pike in bad weather and Capt Americo has . . . . . . . well, done some walking around London ! As part of the preparations, Nigel (Chairman of the Trustees) drove the three Mentors to Snowdon on Saturday 6th February 2016 for a “practice run” up to the summit. The weather was treacherous: gale force winds gusting around 65mph at the summit, continual rain and poor visibility. Despite the Snowdonia Park Rangers doubting that the Team would get to the summit, all three achieved the target safely and got “up and down” in a spectacular time of 4.5 hours ! The Team (minus Capt Americo) have also completed a practice run up Scafell Pike (in glorious weather, thankfully !), before tackling the challenge for real. A time of 3.5 hours was achieved by Jinal (007) and Dr Dan – superb. Dr Dan and Jinal have been planning the logistics of the attempt, which will involve the following: • A 500 mile drive to Ben Nevis in the Kids Count minibus (hope it makes it !) • Overnight stay in a cheap hotel near Ben Nevis. • Start climbing Ben Nevis the following day at approximately 4 – 5.00pm. • An overnight drive from Ben Nevis to Scafell Pike, immediately following the descent, with a chance for the participants to rest or sleep in the minibus on route. • Up and down Scafell Pike early the following morning. • A drive to Snowdon in the morning, with another chance for the Mentors to rest or sleep. • Final ascent of Snowdon to be completed (hopefully) by 4 – 5.00pm the following day. Your sponsorship, no matter how small, would be gratefully received for the challenge. Please visit our “Just Giving” website.
