Fundraising for NARA - The breathing charity

NARA – The Breathing Charity was founded in 1984 following a need for respiration monitors (apnoea alarms) by two families. One baby, Kary, was found to suffer apnoea attacks (stopping breathing) and could do so at any time. The only way her parents could keep a check on her was to take it in turns to watch over her day and night. Following the purchase of a respiration monitor life became a little less fraught, knowing an alarm would sound should she stop breathing. Successfully, on 15 occasions during her first 18 months of life, Kary was resuscitated and thankfully survived. Now, a working adult, she has achieved a BA Hons Degree in Graphic Communication. kary-and-iainSimilarly, Iain, suffered the same condition as Kary, unfortunately and tragically, his parents had previous suffered the loss of two babies due to ‘cot death’. Today, Iain is a fit and well working adult leading a successful and fruitful life. Following the above experiences, the families of the two children got together and founded this small national charity which has been responsible for assisting countless parents whose babies have suffered in a similar way to Kary and Iain. The charity has gone on to expand its` remit and help numerous people who suffer severe asthma and other respiratory conditions by providing them with necessary medical equipment, support, information and care. NARA is solely supported by public donations and fund-raising. Whilst having a minimum of remunerated staff, it is mainly assisted by very generous voluntary help to continue its’ day to day work.
